Just in time for the official release of Drupal 7.0, Packt has released a book concentrating on (what you may not know yet) about Drupal 7.

This article is more of a book-review -- an introspection of how the book might valuable to you (or us). Read further for my "per-role" chapter highlights.

What about the book?

Advantages of WebEnabled Hosting

There are some distinct advantages to hosting on the WebEnabled platform. Today I'll discuss a few.

<

ol>

  • Per-vhost (or per "dev env") mysqld instances. This is very uncommon with shared hosting (I think that maybe 1% of providers do it), so it truly makes us different... better. This improves security and reliability of our customers' databases through a level of isolation beyond that typically available on shared hosting.

    Redmine Now Supported

WebEnabled now supports it's first Ruby app: Redmine. We've got lots of new things coming out over the next month and Redmine is one of our favorite additions.

Redmine is a project management tool that has become popular in the last year due to its ease of use and compliment of addons.

Some of the features that are supported include:

Dev -> Stage -> Production Release Management for Drupal

Here's a 15 minute video demonstrating by Benjamin Lowenstein how Code, Configuration, and Content can be staged on WebEnabled and then pushed to a production environment. Here, the production environment is on Acquia. This same approach can be used setup release management to any production environment, regardless of where its hosted.

Contact us if you're interested in setting this up for your own sites.

    Server File Management Tools

Managing remote-server files is a pain, especially when you have to deal with many files AND servers. While FileZilla is amongst the most popular ftp-clients, I tend to use other much better alternatives that I hope you’d find useful.

This is more of a review blog-post based on my experience with remote-server management tools.

    Selection criteria

Before I stick to a specific software, it must match the following criteria:

    • safe for prolonged and daily-use
    • portable or cross-platform solution
    • intuitive
    • secure
    • free!

    Command-line Basics

    A blinking bar in a pitch-black background.

Console, terminal, shell, command-prompt: It comes in many names and flavors.

Many are not aware that the command-line interface plays an important role. Whether as a tool that revolutionized the computing industry, or a tv-inspired device turned into an iPhone app – this too won’t be replaced any time soon.
